Horse Safari In India

The best way to experience Rajasthan is undoubtedly on the back of a horse. A holiday on horseback is one of the best means of sampling the flavour of India's old world hospitality and charm in original ethnic surroundings. Just by opting to ride off the beaten track on an organised horse safari, with any of a growing number of aristocrat entrepreneurs belonging to the erstwhile Royal families of Rajputana, a person can revel in the heady feeling of belonging to a different age, in a timeless and ancient land.

The best way to see the real Rajasthan is to move quietly through the countryside on horseback. On a horse, the traveller can become a part of the landscape, and can visit places a car bound tourist would never see.

What awaits you is an overwhelming and heady experience - no wonder people keep coming back for more. If you choose a Horse Safari as a holiday you will have to bring your own Hard Hats and Boots. A light sweater and jacket are required for the evenings, and don't forget that pair of binoculars. In corresponding with your tour operator, it is a good idea to advise them of your height, weight and riding experience to enable them to match Horse to Rider.

Where to go (Horse Safari):

Anokhi :

The Jaipur Polo and Equestrian Academy is located amongst the picturesque surroundings of the Anokhi Village on the outskirts of the city, five km from the airport. One can ride along numerous trails that lead to the interesting countryside or take riding lessons from expert instructors. Polo lessons and chukkers can also be planned on prior intimation.

Shikarbadi has some of the finest stables in the country. Its horse safaris give the traveller an ideal opportunity to travel off the beaten track and to discover new facets of the colourful land of Rajasthan. Campfire dinners with folk dances and cocktails under clear starlit skies are a part of the itinerary and are sure to find a place in visitor memory for years to come.

Aodhi serves as an ideal base for exploring the imposing Kumbhalgarh Fort. Surrounded by a thickly wooded forest, the ramparts stretch some 36 km. and encompass a lost world of exquisitely carved temples, a tribal village and ruins of an old settlement for you to discover. the North and the North East India elephant safari makes the best option of exploring the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, especially the ones that are located in the Himalayan region. If you have gone to some national parks of the state and ridden an elephant in search of a tiger, then you would be quite aware of the immense versatility of this majestic animal in negotiating the difficult Himalayan terrain that even a jeep will not traverse. Why not an elephant for a long ride, covering days? Well, in the Himalayan forest regions you can do it, especially in national parks such as Corbett in Uttaranchal and Kaziranga in Assam.

The elephant safari tour begins as we enter the ramganga valley and onwards crossing over to the mandal valley, covering some varied tracts of forest and ending in the beautiful forest rest house of halduparao in the palain valley. The wildlife observed on the elephant tour also varies as we pass through different terriens and some mammal species that can be sighted are elephant, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar, ghoral (mountain goat), rhesus & langur monkey, wild boar, jackal, civets, porcupine, etc. The rare ones include the bengal tiger, leopard and a variety of lesser cats, hog deer, sloth & himalayan black bear. The mugger or fresh water crocodile, gharial, otters, turtles and a variety of fishes (mahseer, goonch, trout, etc.) are seen in and around the ramganga river. Reptile species igclude monitor lizard, king cobra, python, etc.

Elephants have never been known to attack a tourist launch. This, in spite of the fact that elephants are at home in the water. Elephant, Wild Pig, Sambar and Guar are the four most popular animals with Thekkady's visitors. The smaller ones, however, are as interesting.

Camel Safari in India

through the hostile spice route or a royal caravan serai heading for one of the medieval kingdoms of the Thar desert- without many of the hardships of course! They are a great way to see the desert and to enjoy a novel and adventurous holiday.

The Great Indian Desert may not have great expanses of sand dunes and incredible spaces of wilderness as large as those of the Sahara and Namibia, but more than makes up for it with some glorious citadels and extremely colorful and unspoilt villages. Its sand dunes are more easily accessible from airports and railway stations than those of many African countries.

Camel safaris trace their origins to the time of trade between India and China, when camel caravans would journey along established trade routes laden with spices and herbs and jewels. They provide an opportunity to get a glimpse of traditional Indian life in the desert, with all the hardships, the beauty and the desolation. The accommodation on the way consists of primitive thatched mud huts, and the way of life-though hospitable-is entirely ethnic.

India is a very vast and extraordinarily varied land, offering almost unlimited opportunities for adventure sports of all sorts - from mountain-climbing and trekking to scuba diving and whitewater rafting and much more. However, for many visitors adventure travel in India means safari travel, and the best-known safari area in the country is the vast expanse of Thar Desert, with its continuous stretch of golden sand.

While meandering through the golden landscape of the Thar Desert, you will come face to face with the rich heritage, culture and the colorful lifestyles of the royal state of Rajasthan. Camel has been an integral part of the desert life. It comes to the rescue of the desert people who have to wander miles in search of water.

Added to this the easy pace of the safari on a camel back will provide you an opportunity to enjoy and observe the minutes of the land of forts, citadels, colors and enchanting people.
